Black Hawk helicopter crashes on golf course
A US Army Black Hawk helicopter with three people aboard crashed Monday on a Maryland golf course, according to reports.
One crew member was evacuated to a local hospital, the Fort Belvoir Army installation in Fairfax County, Va., where the chopper was based, said on its Facebook page.
There was no immediate information on the status of the other two crew members. A report by Reuters, citing radio transmissions, about a fatality could not be immediately confirmed.
The Army installation described the incident as a “hard landing” – though the military frequently describes serious crashes as “hard landings,” even when the aircraft is destroyed, AFP reported.
The Sikorsky UH-60, also known as a Black Hawk, went down at the Breton Bay Golf and Country Club in Leonardtown, about 60 miles southeast of Washington, DC, Fox News reported.
WJLA posted a video of the smoldering wreckage surrounded by rescuers after the helicopter crashed about 1:30 p.m. Two people were seen assisting what appeared to be an injured crew member.
Two police medevac helicopters were sent to the scene.
A golf pro at Breton Bay said he witnessed the disaster in St. Mary’s County.
“He was kind of flying sideways, pretty low, and then as we got out on the deck watching it, he got treetop level and all of a sudden we saw the tail spin up and just spinning around and we heard him go down,” Mike Harvey told WBAL News Radio 1090 AM.
“You could just hear the rotors hitting trees. There was no explosion or anything,” he said, adding that no one had been playing golf at the site of the crash.
